Frequently Asked Questions

What positions are available?

Visit the Jobs Opportunities page, we will be accepting applications for those with "Open" status. Make sure to check this page regularly.

How do I apply?

Resumes and cover letters are to be submitted through the online application process. Please combine both the cover letter and resume into one pdf document. Questions on the application process can be sent to csamain@uoguelph.ca.

Do I need a cover letter and who do I address it to?

Cover letters are extremely important. It is your opportunity to convey your skills and experience, and how they are relevant to the position you are applying to. Depending on the position, cover letters should be 1-2 pages in length. Cover letters should be addressed to the "Hiring Committee".

I'm applying to multiple positions, what do I do?

Make sure to send a customized and tailored resume and cover letter for each position you are applying to. Complete the online form for each position.

When will I hear back from the hiring committee?

It can take up to three (3) weeks for the hiring committees to review applications and contact candidates for interviews. We only contact individuals selected for an interview. Make sure to check your email regularly, as this will be our primary method of contact.

I got an interview, what now?

Congratulations! The hiring committee chair will outline the next steps in their email. Make sure to reply to the chair, and confirm your interview time. Make sure to come prepared. Review the job description, do some research about the CSA and practice interview questions. The CSA is a relaxed workplace. When dressing for your interview, aim for smart business casual. Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early and check-in with the Front Office staff as you will have the opportunity to review the interview questions during this time before your scheduled interview.

What is the interview process like?

Hiring committees are made up of at least 3 individuals, usually the outgoing staff member, supervising executive, and a board member. We use a standardized point system, meaning every candidate has the same allotted amount of time, is asked the same questions, and each response is graded the same way. Responses are graded against predetermined criteria, and points are added for a total score at the end of the interview. The candidate with the most points is offered the position after a successful reference check. You are allowed to take notes throughout the interview as well as skip and revisit questions.

I just interviewed for a position, what happens now?

After interviewing all of the selected candidates, the hiring committee should get back to you within a week to let you know whether you were successful or not. Hiring committees are independent of each other, meaning they do not communicate with each other; nor do your responses in one interview affect your success in another. If you received an offer and applied to multiple positions you may wait for a response from the other hiring committee(s) before accepting an offer of employment extended to you.
