Cover Letter —
Yes, you need one! This is an opportunity to demonstrate why you deserve the job. Here are some tips:
- Don’t be afraid to sell yourself.
- Use key words from job description/factsheet
- Get our attention, extrapolate on your resume
- Your cover letter and resume should be complementary
- Be creative, yet professional, with formatting
- Make yourself standout
- 1-2 pages in length
- Make sure you include your contact information
Resume —
Your resume is a summary of your relevant skills and experiences (previous job or volunteer positions)
- Avoid large blocks of text- readability is important
- Use keywords from the job description/factsheet
- Take the time to highlight your skills section
- Keep your resume up-to-date
- Get someone to proofread it
- Ensure your name and at least one contact method is listed on every page (email or phone number) in the event individual pages are lost
- Make sure you include your contact information
Submitting your Application —
- Submit your files as one pdf document.
- Avoid the use of colours, we print all materials in black and white
- If applying to more than one position, submit individual cover letters/resumes for each position.
Before the Interview —
Prepare, prepare, prepare!
- Check your email/voicemail often to see if you got an email and to select a time slot
- Research the job and the company/organization – you should know what the CSA is
- Practice in front of a mirror, or to a friend
- Practice answering a variety of questions
Your Interview —
One step closer to getting the position!
- Show up on time; don’t be late for your interview
- Be yourself and smile. Relax!
- Turn off cell phone and all other electronic devices
- Make eye contact with the members of the hiring committee
- Don’t be afraid to pause before answering questions
- The CSA allows you to revisit and skip questions
- Give clear, concise responses, and answer all components of the questions
- Thank interviewers for the interview
